Cleaning off My Desk

I had a leftover stencil from the card I posted here and decided to use it before tackling any other challenges.

You can see there are bits of molding paste and plenty of gold shimmer from the Heidi Swapp Color Shine. The leaves were also leftovers from the wreath I made on this card and are tucked loosely into the openings on the cover plate. A few flower blossoms and a sentiment flag finish this one off.

The Color Shine is more shimmer than glitter, but I am still going to link this card to the All That Glitter is Gold Challenge at Moxie Fab World.


I smiled big when I saw the Case This Sketch! #47 challenge this week.

More die cuts hanging around the office are getting used - these Ribbon Candy Borders were leftover from this card and perfect for a pretty literal take on the sketch.

The Technique Tuesday sentiment is embossed on vellum and overlays the green ribobn border. An inked wood leaf finishes the card off.

MIM #133 + MFW All That Glitters + SSS Anything Goes

I am really enjoying the Make It Monday #133: Create a Flocked Look With Dimensional Paste challenge from Danielle Flanders this week. You really should check out her tutorial at Capture the Moment and play along - I'm finding it kind of addictive!

A Quatrefoil cover plate stencil and Golden Light Molding Paste create the raised design.

Before removing the stencil, gold Heidi Swapp Color Shine was sprayed over the whole panel. Why yes my friends, I spray misted! I did leave the panel alone for the color to set a bit, but needed to remove the stencil before the molding paste set.

I was thrilled to have a pretty clean panel when the stencil came off - there was a little bit of color bleed in the top right corner, but that was it.

I love the color variation as the Color Shine settled in the nooks & crannies of the molding paste.

A gold shimmer cardstock ampersand and sentiments from the PTI Grand Ampersand Stamp set finish off the card.

Papertrey Ink September 2013 Blog Hop Take Two + MFW All That Glitters is Gold

I'm back with another card for the PTI September Blog Hop where the inspiration this month is wreaths. You can check out all the details here at Capture the Moment.

For this card, I created my own wreath using a small leaf die from Happiness In Bloom Leaves set and Pinefeather cardstock. A Pinefeather circle provides a base for the leaves.

The "Peace" is die cut from gold shimmer cardstock and cut down to fit on the wreath. The gold ringed berries are gem stickers that have been in my stash a long, long time. I think a handful get used every year and I still have plenty left.

This photo captures the soft glow of the gold cardstock nicely - perfect for the All That Glitters is Gold challenge Cath has issued at Moxie Fab World. There is still plenty of time to play along!

Papertrey Ink September 2013 Blog Hop

For the Papertrey Ink September Blog Hop the inspiration is wreaths. You can find all the details at Capture the Moment and have until the end of the day to join in the fun.

This card is super sweet and simple.

When I saw the Holiday Cheer Stamp & Die Set in this month's PTI release I knew right away I would be buying it. The first thing I did with the set was die cut the wreath from Simply Chartreuse felt. I toyed with the idea of punching a few holes in the wreath to nestle in the enamel dots, but thought I might stretch & pull the felt too much.

I tend to hoard my supplies, but I have an abundance of enamel dots right now and love the way they look on the felt.

I'll be back in a while with another card, but now I'm off to hop around - can't wait to see what everyone has created!

Make It Monday #133: Creating a Flocked Look with Dimensional Paste

As I was typing out the title of this post, I thought "oops", but I am going to post this card anyway because I think it still meets the challenge even though I didn't create a "flocked look".

Danielle Flanders makes her debut at the MIM challenge at Capture the Moment with this great video tutorial using cover plate stencils to add dimensional media, creating unique backgrounds for a card.

The stencil was cut with the Quatrefoil Cover Plate and Hawaiian Shores tinted gel medium is layered on the cardstock panel.

This is the gel medium I used, and it has a gorgeous, translucent quality that is hard to capture in the photo. It reminds me of glass tiles.

Paper Smooches Sparks & CAS(E) this Sketch #46 + MIM132: Layered Borders Take 2 & MFW Stickers Challenge

While my Halloween stash and scalloped border die were out yesterday, I started wondering if they could be used to make a Mummy card. With Dawn's Make It Monday #132: Layered Border Die Cuts challenge this week I had to give it a try.

This is not the best Mummy card out there, but it did make my kids laugh.

The crepe paper strips were die cut and wrapped around a cardstock panel. The sentiment is made using a Wonderful Words die and Authentique sticker from my stash. The green epoxy sticker eyes are also from my stash.

Because I used stickers on this card, it is also being entered in the Moxie Fab World Stickers & Tape Challenge to celebrate the new issue of Handmade Cards.


This second card combines the Paper Smooches Sparks Cool Shades Challenge with CAS(E) this Sketch! #46.

I love these colors! I colored & fussy cut the owl from My Peeps, picked a sentiment from Chit Chat and then did something I rarely do - decided to stencil an area to anchor my pieces and stamp the sentiment right onto the card front. This really is a big, brave step for me.

I love the swirly stencil and organic shape that is created.

An owl is popped up with foam adhesive and sits on a Memory Box branch die that is trimmed down a bit.

Make It Monday #132: Layered Border Die Cuts & MFW Stickers & Tape Challenge

The Make It Monday Challenge this week is to layer border die cuts, which for some reason has been a bit harder than I thought it would. I have plenty of dies, just not that many border dies and even fewer than layer nicely. You can check out Dawn's tutorial here.

I layered a few pieces of patterned paper from the Teresa Collins Masquerade Party collection, originally planning to use a couple of the strongly Halloween themed papers, but the pattern didn't line up with the scallops so I ended up using the not so Halloweenie papers. I do really love this about Teresa's seasonal paper lines - there are plenty of non-theme papers included.

The sentiment is created with a stamp from Birthday Bash and the Headline Alphabet dies. I finished the card off by adding a couple circle stickers (Authentique), a chipboard piece (Making Memories) and a few MME enamel dots.

I am also linking this card to the Moxie Fab World Stickers and Tape Challenge. Cath has issued a ton of challenges in celebration of Paper Crafts Homemade Cards and there is plenty of time to play along!

Make It Monday #131 & Simon Says Emboss + Clearly Besotted Challenge #4 & Color Throwdown #259

I usually love the Make It Monday challenge at Capture the Moment, and was excited to try this MIM #131: Striped Embossing. You can head over to the blog & check out Betsy's tutorial here.

The recycling bin is overflowing as my frustration grew trying to rid my panel of stray embossing powder. I can't blame Betsy - her demonstration is flawless & and to my surprise I could really mask the image with a post-it notes.

I used my embossing buddy and a swiffer duster before stamping and a paintbrush to try swipe away the strays before embossing, but you can see the image is not perfect.

A couple of embossing folders add interest to the Plum Pudding card base and Hawaiian Shores panel, along with the angled cuts that I've been admiring around the internet. All this embossing gets this card entered in the Simon Says . . . Emboss It at the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge Blog.

This second card came together much fast and combines the Clearly Besotted Challenge #4: Stamp Your Own Background with Color Throwdown #259.

I used the small feather from a Fancy Feathers and three inks to create the background, adding a sentiment from the set and another couple of feathers that were fussy cut.

Seize the Birthday + Simon Says Emboss

Yesterday my son came into the office looking for a birthday card and was disappointed. I took a quick look through everything he had rejected and agreed there was nothing appropriate for teen boys in the pile.

With a very small window of opportunity, I am really kind of proud of what was created in under 10 minutes.

Have I mentioned how much I love this "happy" die from My Favorite Things? Expect to see it used over and over and over :) I cut the happy panel first, leaving enough room to add a stamp from MFT's Birthday Sentiments. I needed to use a contrasting panel between it and the kraft card base and had a couple of smaller pieces of blue cardstock on my desk. Neither was large enough for the panel I wanted, but I put them both in my woodgrain embossing folder. They are adhered with an unseen gap under the sentiment panel.

 

My son would have been fine with taking the card at that point, but I needed to do just a little more. After pinking edge (am I reaching, or does this look like a saw edge cutting the wood?) and wrapping a piece of knotted twine around the panel, it still met with teen boy approval.

I knew when I started this card that Simon Says . . . Emboss It this week at the Simon Says Stamp  Wednesday Challenge Blog and was pleased to discover that Anything Goes at Seize the Birthday challenge blog, so I am linking this card to both challenges.

This is my first time playing along with the Seize the Birthday challenge and there is an optional "toppings" to go "monochromatic". There is only one color plus a neutral on this card, but given the high contrast between the two I would not call it monochromatic - would you?

Runway Inspired Challenge #43 + CASology #60: Apple

With the kids back in school you would think I have a lot of time on my hands, but that just isn't the way it has been over the last couple of weeks. I am squeezing in little moments here and there and finally have two cards to share.

The first is for the Runway Inspired Challenge #43 where this cool ensemble provided the inspiration.

The black & white background, plus bold color and graphic lines were too much for me to pass without trying to come up with something.

I love the way this card came together. It started with the ribbon - I knew I had this scalloped ribbon in my stash and thought it would be perfect to mimic the white shirt. Pure white might have been a better match, but this ribbon was already tea-stained along the edges. As I was poking through my ribbon basket, I also spied the black gingham ribbon.

The MFT happy die and birthday stamped sentiment work to reinforce the clean lines of the inspiration image.

This second card is just going to make the CASolgy Challenge #60 deadline where the cue card is "apple".

As much as I believe in eating an apple a day, the first thing that comes to mind around our house when you say "apple" is iMac or MacBook or our beloved iPhones, so I created this quick CAS card.

I paired a Paper Smooches sentiment with a Simon Says Stamp Talk Bubble and the MFT camera die to make my phone. The Hawaiian Shores cardstock is pretty close to the color of my Otterbox case.

Hope you are having a great weekend - we spent a fun afternoon at the local Greek Festival and are tempted to go back tomorrow for more food, music & dancing.

Monday Mood Board #19 + CAS(E) This Sketch #43 & Simon Says

I have a couple of cards to share today. Originally I was going to combine the Wplus9 Monday Mood Board with the CAS(E) this Sketch challenge, but the card just wasn't coming together so I ended up with two cards from the pile of bits & pieces on my desk.

First I will share the Monday Mood Board card.

I was in the mood to play with patterned paper, so pulled a few pieces from a MME and Crate Paper 6x6 pad and cut them with the Wplus9 Quilt Cuts 2 Die. Of course, I ended up with enough pieces to create 4 squares, so you might see one appear on another card in the near future.

The sentiment is from Fresh Cut Florals.

This next card is based on the CAS(E)This Sketch #43 and uses a few MFT dies, a Memory Box die and a sentiment from Papertrey Ink.

I didn't want to add another paper panel to cover the wood plank patterned paper, so painted a thin layer of white paint to distress and lighten it enough to stamp the sentiment. I added a couple of random dry brush strokes around the fishtail banner as well.
